A LITTLE BACKGROUND – SINGING HARPIST SHEILA O’SHEA
I grew up in a large musical family in Borrisokane, Co Tipperary. Family members tell me that I made my musical debut as a naively confident 3 year old, but I have no recollection of this whatsoever!
I went away to a convent boarding school in Co Galway, aged 12 where I was first introduced to the harp. Regular school performances and involvement in various Feis’s and Fleath Cheoil’s (Irish music competitions) provided the ideal introduction to performance and further development. During school holidays I played and sang at Ireland’s foremost Medieval Castles; Bunratty Castle, Co Clare & Dunguaire in Co Galway. Later I qualified at the Royal Irish Academy of Music in Dublin.
My parents, brothers and sisters gave me strong encouragement throughout their lives. Their love of all music is something which I am proud to have inherited. My own family support is now equally important to me.
Now based in the UK, I continue to perform locally throughout Yorkshire, regionally and nationally. As no two events are ever the same, the challenges are always welcome and refreshing. My aim is to enhance your special event in whatever way I can through the power of music!
I will meet your requests for any venue. These include civil and church ceremonies, private homes or hotel celebrations, in gardens or castles. My equipment is compact, mobile and adaptable to all environments.
My musical catalogue is broad. Special events are made so with personal choice. I am always delighted to add another tune or song to my harp strings! Some notice is greatly appreciated if additional songs are requested. The more notice I have of your preferences, the better I can adapt my performance.
